While Sgt. Chris Duke was serving in Afghanistan, a suicide bomber tried to attack his base which contained around 50 sleeping soldiers.
His life was saved thanks to three stray dogs named Sacha, Rufus and Target. Duke had befriended the dogs while out in Afghanistan to keep him company and remind him of home. One night as he and the rest of the barracks were sleeping, a suicide bomber crept into the camp with the intention of setting off a bomb and killing all the soldiers sleeping inside.
The dogs woke up barking and biting the bomber, keeping him away from the soldiers. He set his bomb before he could kill any of the soldiers inside. Sacha was tragically so badly injured that she had to be put down but Rufus and Target survived the attack.
Following his return home after his tour was complete, Duke was concerned about the welfare of the dogs. He raised awareness, creating a Facebook page and gathering help from friends to help fund bringing the two dogs over to safety.
The rest of the story is truly heart warming.
